How do you help a dog with seperation anxiety?
Meagan S asked:
My 5 lb toy poodle was attacked by a pit bull in January. Ever since she has (understandably) experienced severe seperation anxiety. I have tried everything I know to do getting nowhere. My landlady just told me that she has been flipping out during the day while I’m at work. I really don’t want to have to move…any ideas?

I sleep with an old blanket and then leave it on the floor for my dog during the morning while I am gone. I wash it after a couple of days and then start over again. He loves it.
you can always get another dog for her to play with while you are gone. that way there is someone else there with her instead of her being alone. Or even try leaving the tv on so that there is some noise in the house. you can also try getting a stuffed animal that she likes and leave that out for her to curl up with.
Consult a behaviorist and your veterinarian. A mild anti-anxiety medication can be a huge help. You can also leave a radio on.
Instead of feeding her from a bowl, freeze her food into a Kong. Give her lots of exercise before you leave, and then give her a Kong or two to keep her busy. You can also hide little treats around the house to help her stay busy.
As a Pit owner, I am sorry that an irresponsible owner allowed their dog to traumatize your poor dog. It is very sad. Good Pit owners are better than that - but there are so many bad owners out there.
I too am wondering the same thing and had the exact same thing happen to my 3 and 1/2 lb Chihuahua I have had him since he was 6 weeks old and is now approachng 2 I have tried things like those listed here and he has a whole toy box to keep him busy, I have tried behavior modification tricks, socialization, treats and things to distract him the first 5 mins I leave only thing Im thinking left is medication but vet won’t even consider it…. I am at a loss as to what to do next!
If you find out anything else please let me know and good luck!!
Your best bet is to ask your vet to refer you to an veterinary behaviorist as this is a health issue; not a training one. There are several techniques that can be tried depending on many factors. As a last resort, she may have to be drugged (there are several that can be prescribed). Just don’t cage her; if it is true separation anxiety, she will hurt her self trying to get out.
my dog has separation anxiety. I was at my wits end trying to deal with it, because she was soiling in the house, barking, trying to dig through the hardwood floor and the door, and destroying anything she could get her mouth on. I found something called Rescue Remedy. It’s generally found in health food stores near the vitamins (people vitamins). It’s a mix of floral essences and designed to help promote calm behavior. I give my dog about 6-7 drops on her tongue or on her nose. I still leave out toys for her, and turn the tv on, and always make sure she’s fed and has water and has been to the bathroom, so that way there’s nothing extra for her to stress over. I’ve had almost no problems at all since using it. I think she’s chewed up one newspaper, and messed in the house once (but I forgot to take her out before I left, so that was my fault). It’s wonderful stuff, and that way I didn’t have to resort to personality altering drugs.
